Purposes of the practicum

The SEA Teacher Project, also known as the "Pre-Service Student Teacher Exchange in Southeast Asia," seeks to offer pre-service student teachers from Southeast Asian universities the chance to gain teaching experience through practicum placements in schools located in different Southeast Asian countries. The program follows the following objectives:

  1. To enable pre-service student teachers to develop their teaching skills and pedagogy

  2. To encourage the pre-service student teachers to practice their English skills

  3. To allow the pre-service student teachers to gain a broader regional and world view

  4. To expose future teachers to diverse teaching and learning situations and opportunities, and the value of flexibility.

From the objectives of the program, I believe I was able to achieve the goals, leading to a transformed teaching due to the experiences gained in my assigned school. Indeed, it made me into a more flexible teacher, trying to accommodate to the setting of the students. I was also able to have a wider view and perception because I was able to learn their culture and this has developed my teaching skills and pedagogy.

Procedure of the practicum

To teach students, it is vital to prepare the necessary things to ensure that there is alignment. First, I observe the students and teacher during their classes. This is assess the students and take in vital information that could help me in my teaching practice. I also ask the teacher pointer to help me in my demonstration and for students to better understand. Then, I check the curriculum to base my objectives of the lesson plan, then see available materials online and offline as source to the lesson. After which, I proceed to the crafting of my lesson plan which comprises various parts that are organized according to the objectives. I first conduct the preliminaries consisting of self-introduction, classroom rules, and checking of attendance. This is followed by a motivation activity to catch the attention of the learners. Next, I proceed to the discussion. After, I conduct an application activity to test their remembering skills of the story. This is followed by an evaluation exam and the assignment.

Outcomes of the practicum

I was able to see fair to excellent test results from the students when I gave them examination about present perfect tense. As for the application activity where they played a quiz bee, the students got all the answers correctly. As for their assignment, they were able to turn them and was able to get good outputs.

During the discussion, everyone was engaged and listening clearly. They also answer my questions, making my class a successful interactive class.

This has warmed my heart and ensured that I was able to do a good job in teaching my students.

Challenges of the practicum

Before setting foot at the country, I was already having doubts and troubles on how I was to teach students who are English as Foreign Language (EFL) learners. The following are the troubles I had during my practicum:

  • Language Barrier

  • Lack of preparation for teaching practice

  • Time frame

Overall impressions

I successfully accomplished the program's objectives, a fulfilling achievement that has broadened both my mind and heart. The teachers and students I encountered were remarkable, fostering a supportive and interactive environment. Despite the inevitable challenges, I confronted them head-on, emerging as a more adept teacher. This invaluable and unforgettable experience will forever shape my journey as an educator, with every step forward accompanied by cherished memories of my learnings and the smiles of the students.

Suggestions for future improvement

  • The program should brief the resource teachers of the expected tasks and outcomes of the sea teacher

  • The program should've seen the academic calendar of the school in order to give the teachers more opportunity to teach and observe.
